Listen to Des Roar – Not Over For Me

I had never heard New York City natives Des Roar until we brought them in for a recording session at the Bionic Ear studio a year ago. Since that time the band has impressed me with their killer rock n roll, which has led to a number conversations with friends about the band, the kind where I pretty much tell them they need their music, especially since they just released their new album Mad Things and spreading the word seems kind of mandatory for this line of work.

IRR: Tell us about the band?
Des: Des Roar are a 4 piece Rock N Roll band from NYC.

IRR: Have you ever been fed up with playing music or with band members?
Des: That’s kinda like asking “Have you ever been feed up with a boyfriend/girlfriend in a…… relationship?” So, yes.

IRR: What was your first concert experience? Do you remember how you felt once the concert was over?
Des: Ryan: the Beach Boys with my mom.

IRR: Did you grow up wanting to play music, or when did the whole making albums thing come about?
Des: I wish I was like Briteny or Christina and say “Oh yeah, I knew when I was a baby I wanted to make records and change the world!” Blah, blah blah. But that would be a lie.

IRR. What qualifies you guys to be in a band?
Des: Qualifications? Umm, wanting to be in the band I guess. Believing in what we do.

IRR. Do you have a favorite song you have ever written?
Des: Ryan: None of my songs are my favorite. I like Ben’s songs best personally. Which one? His latest one is really good “Baby You’re A Monster” ’cause everyone thinks it’s written about an ex of mine, ha ha!!!

IRR. What is your greatness weakness as a band?
Des: Greatest weakness? Wow, umm, I like to recognize our strengths personally.

IRR: What qualities should a successful label or manager have?
Des: Getting shit done. Most of ‘em talk a big fuckin’ game and at the end of the day, if you want shit done you have to do it yourself.

IRR: What’s the scariest thing that has ever happened to you in your life?
Ryan: Is this a band question?

IRR: What’s the first thing you do when the band arrives in a new town while on tour?
Des: Find out the first place we can have a shit, shower, eat… not neccessarliy in that order.

IRR: Have you ever had an audience member give you the willies because they kept looking at you all weird?
Des: Almost every show. I think Lyla gets it the most.

IRR: If you could re-record, or re-write any song of yours what would that song be?
Des: No, never.

IRR: What’s the worst place you have ever played a show at, and why?
Des: Rocky’s Rock Star Bar in Brooklyn. Bad vibes, shitty sound, etc. They expected us to have our own door person charging in and expected a percentage of the door.

IRR: In a perfect world how many albums would you have to sell to be happy?
Des: Ryan: I have never thought about this. I’m pretty easy to please. I would like to sell enough records to not have to bartend anymore. Be able to tour and not have to stress about money. If there is a number for that, I want to know what it is. That would make me a very happy man.

IRR: What do you guys have planned for the future?
Des: Future plans? Tour, record, tour, record, tour, record. Keep making music.

IRR: What music do you listen to when you are having a bad day?
Des: I don’t like to listen to music when I’m having a bad day. I like to read about serial killers. It makes me feel better about myself. Either that or watch Intervention or Hoarders on A&E. If you really want to feel good about yourself, I advise watching those shows. Your mood will change real quick.

IRR: If you had your life to live over again, what one thing would you change?
Alan: Would have become a better wrestler so I could fulfill my life-long dream of wrestling in the WWE.

Bear considers himself a music lover. Not an afficionade. He is in love with almost every genre of music, but not so much Rap. He loves sad music imbued with nostalgia. He doesn't enjoy bands that sound good on album but somehow forget to play their instruments in a live setting. In fact seeing a band that sucks live makes him never want to listen to music again. He was born in a hick town, then proceeded to move around the country with wanderlust in his eyes. He now resides in the great rain of the North West with the love of his life.
