Karnivool – Sound Awake – Album Review
Written By Lancifer
Score 9/10
Taking on the task of reviewing Karnivool’s new album Sound Awake is not an easy one. On one hand, I run the risk of not being able to adequately give Karnivool the credit they deserve for producing such an amazing album. On the other hand, I run the risk of over-hyping the album to the point that causes people to set their expectations too high, potentially causing them to not be as impressed with such an amazing album. I think I am willing to run the risk of the latter. Boasting of chart topping debut status in Australia, the Australian progressive rock quintet has a full artillery ready to make some damage in the US and UK with its release this month.
Karnivool – Set Fire To The Hive
Ian Kenny has a voice of range and ability that is nearly unmatched when it comes to progressive rock. Something hard to find in the age of screaming vocals and mainstream talent-less yelling that is often confused with singing. The instrumentals of this album are something else in their own, mixing up the time signature to stray from what you’re used to hearing. The album starts off strong with a good representation of what you are in for with the remainder of the album with Simple Boy. Set Fire To The Hive represents the more course edge of the album with distorted vocals and less of a down time, like many of the other tracks contain. Track lengths also stray from the radio-friendly norm clocking in with the longest just over twelve minutes.
It has been said before, “the more you love music, the more music you love”, and I am a firm believer in this. Karnivool has managed however, to excite that love into something far greater, almost to the brink of not being able to describe it. Very seldom does an album, let alone a rock album, get me this excited for music. Each track provides a listening rollercoaster of highs and lows. Sound Awake is a quality album from start to end, making it difficult to find one song I like any more than another. It’s an album that needs to be experienced in its fullness.

I hate to say this but this is a copout on your part. I know damn well you LOVED this show .Who wouldn’t love it. Ian Kenny is if not one of the best singers in Australia. He commands the stage like a true rock god. For you to say “Read the album review is weak. What about the interview you had with Ian and Drew from the band where is that ? Don’t be a wuss put up there for all to see. This bands plays to 60 to 70 K people back home. Give themn the respect they deserve. I saw you at the show and you couldn’t stop moving you loved it !!!
