Daily Album Pick: Maria Taylor – Overlook

Screen shot 2011 08 25 at 1.54.29 PM Daily Album Pick: Maria Taylor Overlook

I wouldn’t say Maria Taylor has gone out on a limb with her fourth solo album Overlook, but something must have happened to her since her last effort Lady Luck, for this self-produced collection of 9 new songs are bigger, bolder, and more daring in a way that sounds all new. Maria has accomplished some hook filled tracks with big lead guitars, the best examples are “In A Bad Way”, and “This Could Take a Lifetime” – where her vocals are gloriously upfront and raw. Switching gears she softens things up with “Bad Idea”, a folk ballad that will have you singing along for the rest of the day – you can also download this track below.

Maria still has plenty of heart-wrenching numbers, “Along For the Ride” is particularly mesmerizing and features her trademark hushed vocals. Perhaps her strongest, and most adventurous track is the dynamic “Masterplan” with drumming and song styling that will keep you guessing as to what she’s gonna do next. Maria has accomplished her most well-rounded effort to-date with Overlook and is bound to be one of 2011′s very best.

Invaluable contributors include: neighbor Lester Nuby III (Verbena, Vulture Whale) engineered the album at Ol Elegante Studios in Birmingham, and plays drums on two tracks (Taylor herself played the remaining drum parts); friend Browan Lollar (of Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit; lead guitar, acoustic guitar, lap steel); brother Macey Taylor (The Mystic Valley Band, A.A. Bondy; bass, banjo, organ, keys). LA-based but Birmingham-native Daniel Farris mixed the album, and her friend, local artist Margarette Simmons, designed Overlook’s artwork.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. – Good Name, Great Band, Complete Gentlemen

Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr put on one hell of a show.  Not only that, but they happen to be some of the nicest guys we have had the pleasure of working with.  Talking to them after their set showed them to be just as pleasant as their stage presence would suggest.  And that is saying quite a bit, as on stage they are non stop smiles and excitement that careens over onto the crowd in a contagious manner.  Bringing the [...]

The Pure Insanity of Reptile Youth

There is a particular level of eccentricity that comes hand in hand with a Reptile Youth concert. Their live performances have become somewhat iconic due to the pandemonium created by lead singer Mads Damsgaard Kristiansen’s audacious means of expression. I was first exposed to the wild and primitive discord of Reptile Youth in Berlin, back in 2011 when the band went by the name Reptile and Retard (which was incredibly fitting for my first impression). Their interpretation of electronic-dance is [...]

Man Man is an Ears Best Friend

Man Man is a show that should never be missed.  It is the equivalent to a Barnum and Bailey show from years past.  It is the cultural event that an entire town night should revolve around that eve and be the subject of conversation for weeks after.  As a matter of fact, upon exit from the show that night a description of the show was overheard as being a mixture of a circus marching band, high energy gregorian chants with [...]

    Conway at El Rey Theatre

She’s wearing a siren red jumpsuit and white dirty flats. She’s bounding across the stage lifting her legs, doing stretches, marching… She looks like she’s either a jazzercise instructor or the Red Power Ranger channeling eons of inner powers.

Wimp Live Session by VICE in Copenhagen

Through the doors of a classical piano shop, with a handful of passers-by making feeble attempts to conduce any kind of melody from the teeth of the stationery beasts, we made our way down into the heavenly white dungeon of ToneArt recording studio. Only sixty tickets were made available for this private and intimate ‘wimp’ session with Broke and My Heart the Brave, organised by Vice Magazine Denmark. The effect of this was quite pronounced. Any event that is consummated [...]
