Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Foxygen at The Observatory…And it was Valentines
One of the best sounds that has actually grabbed my attention this year are both Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Foxygen. So, when I saw that they were playing together around the corner at the Observatory I got pretty excited. And tried to get everyone else excited. Unfortunately, it also happened to be Valentines Day. Luckily, most of my friends are single and know the golden rule that you can’t do a date on Valentimes. So a larger group than one would expect accompanied me to this event. The valentines reminder that you are single can be one that fuels feelings of loneliness, which in turn can fuel the intake of alchohol, which in turn can have your friends shouting really stupid stuff at concerts. So I would like to apologize for my friends inciting the crowd to chant “Valentines Day” or “I Love You” or “Alcohol”. On the other hand I would like someone else to apologize for the 45 minute minimum transfer time between the bands. It was excruciating. Other than that, the show went swimmingly well. Every single, act that night was completely different from
the other but still on parallel planes that allowed for everyone to enjoy every part. Wampire opened the evening and set the tone for the eve. Heads began to bop and loll towards the front of the stage. Following Wampire were the kids from Foxygen. It seemed that a large portion of the crowd was there to see the local kids make good. The crowd erupted in effervescent excitement and began to dance like zombies missing limbs. The sound of Foxygen borders on a toned down Unicorns with the narrative lead of frontman Sam France channeling the ghost of Mick Jagger. The kids loved it. Following Foxygen was Unknown Mortal Orchestra. They have quite a departure from their geneaology in the Mint Chicks from N Zed. They seem to have decided to jump feet first into the psychedlia and lo-fi sound and are creating wakes that are being noted throughout music critics and the blogosphere alike. If these descriptions aren’t really explaining the sound to you than go to their sites and listen to them. Seriously, go listen to each and every one of them
