Watch: Duniven Throwback to Silent Movies in “My Delight”

LA-based blues rockers Duniven were inspired by a Laurel & Hardy skit for the direction of their newest music video. “My Delight” follows two ‘blockheads,’ portrayed by Patrick Duniven himself and sidekick Tommy Mofid, as they indulge in hilarious shenanigans at the cost of a mean homeowner.

The song is a sweet Americana tale of coming across the perfect girl when “the mood was right and the music was groovy.” Fit with harmonica howls, electric guitar and even a solo by David Immerglück of Counting Crows. The third single released off of the forthcoming The Plan, “My Delight” is a bouncy track that flows charmingly for 4 minutes you won’t even notice have passed!

Slated for release on July 8, Duniven celebrates the release of their 3rd LP The Plan along with the video July 6, 2k16 with Paris Radio, Trapdoor Social and Avid Dancer at The Hi Hat in Los Angeles.

It appears The Dead Ships made a New Year’s resolution to take 2k16 by storm. Just on the heels of finding their name in the Saturday section of on the Coachella 2k16 poster, the rock trio has announced they will be joining Le Butcherettes on tour as well as making an appearance at SXSW in Austin.

The Dead Ships released EP I in May of last year and have since toured Canadian Music Week, been intimate with SoFar Sounds supported Eagles of Death Metal with their cover of “I Love You All The Time” and even met Weird Al Yankovic.

For friends Jessica Delijani and Tommy Nickerson, broken hearts spells music collaboration. Cue Disco Shrine, the dream pop neo-disco project that has flowered from heartache’s soil. The LA-based duo recently supported IRR favorite’s Figs Vision residency at the Bootleg Theater in December and have been picking up steam with their single “Shy.” It’s no surprise that Passion Pit and Chela are inspirations but Nickerson cites a bad party as his influence, “There’s nothing better than leaving a shitty party after having a few drinks and taking it out on the laptop.” “Drive” is sensual and undoubtedly what you’re blasting on repeat as you drive away from that bad party shouting sayonara to a defeated romance. With shimmering synths and echoing guitars, Delijani describes “Drive” as “being in a really toxic relationship and learning to finally let go.”

Disco Shrine has an EP slated for release in March featuring “Shy” and “Drive.” But first, they’ll be releasing a music video on January 25th, directed by Andrew Butte.

It has been 6 years since we lost our minds to Yeasayer’s Odd Blood with singles “Madder Red” and “Ambling Alp” and 4 years since their last release Fragrant World. Today Brooklyn’s pop trio have announced Amen & Goodbye with their new single “I Am Chemistry.” Not just a track, but an incredible video featuring renowned sculptor David Altmejd portraying rebirth and a dance break that makes shoves Gumby off the map. While the group stays true to their disfigured and unconventional pop, Amen & Goodbye diverges from the heavy production sound and was instead recorded to tape at Outlier Inn Studio in upstate New York and handed to Joey Waronker (drummer – Atoms For Peace / Beck) for to complete the cycle of strange.

In their first interview following the Paris attacks, Eagles of Death Metal, who the world now knows as the rock band performing at the Bataclan that evening, requested that artists cover their song “I Love You All The Time.” With proceeds going to the victims, many bands have hardly hesitated – My Morning Jacket, Savages, The Dean Ween Group, and now Los Angeles local rock trio, The Dead Ships.

“The Paris attacks were so horribly terrifying,” says lead singer Devlin McCluskey. “Whenever these big tragic events happen, everyone just wants to help. But I know for us, we usually don’t know how – do we give blood, donate, change our Facebook profile? So when Eagles of Death Metal put out the call for people to cover their song, it felt like a small thing but something we could actually do.”

While the trio has been in their practice space demoing dozens of their own new songs, McCluskey admits that this one in particular was fun to work on. He had seen Eagles of Death Metal play at the intimate premiere of Colin Hanks’ new documentary All Things Must Pass back in October and even got to meet the band, so the attacks weren’t so distant “from home” for The Dead Ships. Tracked in their own practice space, this cover is certainly more lo-fi than the band is accustomed to but the rawness only contributes to the integrity and depth in the meaning of the song itself.

The Dead Ships released EP I earlier this year and are gearing up for an eventful 2016.

What an honor to premiere something from the kings of rock n’ roll grunge while they are on their US tour in support of the latest EP, The Phage. Hailing from San Francisco, CA, The Brothers Comatose have been mixing their strings together since 2009. After a successful tour season with the likes of The Devil Makes Three and Yonder Mountain String Band in early 2014, the 5-piece went on to record their third album in Northern California. Now they need to fund the costs of making the record and they really say it best themselves: “The new album is hatched, it is strong, it is ready to fly.”

City Painted Gold is slated for release in March 2016 via their own record label, Swamp Jam Records. The cash they’ll make from the campaign will go towards funding the details of the release itself – pressing, promotion, touring, the whole shebang. Believe it or not, Colorado is churning out some artists you can’t take your ears off of and Flaural is no exception. This 4-piece is proof that a new wave, let’s call it psychwave, is upon us and you don’t have to be stoned to enjoy it. Combining out-of-the-box psychedelic elements, drenched in reverb and glistening guitars, Flaural is buoyant and introspective.

Something of a Frankenstein, Flaural is composed of members of other Colorado projects A Band In Pictures (Connor Birch, Noah Pfaff, Nick Berlin), Bloodhound (Collin Johnson), and Shady Elders (Nick Berlin). Recorded just this past summer with Jeff Cormack (South of France) at PlayPlusRecord Studios in Colorado, their debut EP Thin King is more than just your average instrumentals. Opening with singing bowls in “Staycation” the harmonic structure is meticulously created by multiple bowls tuned and played simultaneously. The list of instruments goes on, including vintage PA’s and Lou Reed’s own MOOG MF-104 effect pedal which you can hear best in “Shower” and “Hungry Lung.” Even the crickets in “Yawn” are the real deal, recorded on Golden, CO one late summer night.

Flaural make great use of their predecessors techniques to develop a contemporary sound that is hypnotic and soothing. Although the group is a young one, having formed in early 2015, the concept for this EP is polished, cohesive and sets a solid ground of potential. ‘Thin King’ EP is slated for release Thursday, Nov. 5.

Appropriately sampling Huey Lewis and the News “Power of Love” to this hip hop track, Kosha Dillz pays his respects to the iconic film referencing it’s expectations of the future to send the positive message that now is the time to act. Kosha Dillz elaborates, “we have all learned various lessons in life. A time will come when we will have to look back at what has happened since ______, and it isn’t about what physical things we will have in the future (such as fax machines, hoverboards, and AK-47’s from Libyan Rebels). It will be about what we “give back” to our world to provide a better future.”

Produced by Nate Greenberg, “Give Back To The Future” is pumped up and fun – just like Nikes in the 80’s.

If Josh Tillman’s Saturday night display at the Wiltern taught me anything, it’s that my love of music is equal to my misanthropy – at least when it comes to LA audiences. Mind you, “music is the air I breathe,” like “literally.”

The show opened with the titular “I Love You, Honeybear.” A melancholically-toned manifesto of love was warped into a sensational number. Every detail of the album recording was present in the live version, yet the cutting charisma of Mr. Tillman punched me in the stomach as he fell to his knees, describing how he’d rather get high in bed with his Honeybear. Together they are, allegedly, impervious to the corruption and destruction of the world outside of their bedroom. Color me kvelling.

One of the reasons I find the music of Father John Misty so endearing is its balance of romantic melodies and biting, aggressive lyrics. “True Affection” is a song that nullifies that description. I wouldn’t be surprised if I learned that Tillman’s goal in producing it was to mock the indie-pop 4/4 beats lousy with men singing in gentle falsettos that have invaded our internet-based radio playlists over the past few years. I can be a sucker for those tunes, but it’s not something I expect from a musician who describes fucking, and uncertainly satisfying someone on top of a grave in Hollywood.

“How many of you were dragged here by someone you love?” He taunted. A young woman with whom I exchanged hostile words over standing room before the show began raised her hand. I have to appreciate her candor. After all, it was about time someone in the audience matched Tillman’s directness. That was a minor frustration compared to the fight that broke out at the first verse of “Chateau Lobby #4.” The song abruptly stopped. The house lights awoke. “I understand, that’s one of my more aggressive songs,” Tillman quipped at the men involved in what he described as a “testosterone-fueled rage.” Chateau is as lyrically descriptive as FJM gets when it comes to his life with Emma Tillman (née Garr). Who the fuck fights when a beardy, sparkly jacket-clad poet sings a pleasant mariachi-style ballad to the love of his life? LA, what is wrong with you?

In fact, as my friend and I laughed through our singalong to “The Night Josh Tillman Came To Our Apartment,” I noticed the girl next to me staring at us. I asked, “Are you happy?” only to be met with a quizzical, “Um, yeah?” I didn’t realize this was the place to play the Whose Line Is It Anyway? game where players converse solely in questions. Of course, that uptalk was apropos for the tone of the song. Fun fact: this is the song I quoted in the first paragraph of this review!

One chick standing to my right battled my growing irritation with LA crowds (this rage has been gradually growing for years). We busted out our best moves for “I’m Writing A Novel.” I still don’t know if that song is encouragement for or a warning against doing psychedelics in Big Sur. Don’t care, danced and sang with someone who genuinely wanted to be at the show as much as I did.

A few songs later, “Bored In The USA” began. Everyone in the audience knew their cues to cheer at the segments where laugh tracks can be heard on the album recording. Tillman’s gestures enhanced what is already an alarm for millenials to stop watching live music happen through a recording device. Flailing fingers, as if to say “lol amirite?” evoked chuckles among the few who actually listened to the lyrics of the song. Others laughed because “omg who is this guy? he’s hilar.” And then Tillman confirmed a rumor I had heard. He snatched the phone out of an upfront fan holding her phone in his face, probably prepared to snapchat a video of the performance. Honestly, if you’re going to take your god damn phone out to record a show, at least make a recording that doesn’t disappear from your phone’s storage. Speaking of which, after singing at the phone for the remainder of the song, Tillman spoke into it for a while. He went on about how ironic it was that people were cheering for a song about being present in experiences, yet they were going to watch everything happening right in front of them through a screen. Then he joked that the phone’s media storage limit had been met. But it was okay, but she’ll never watch the video he created. After all, she needs to make room for the show she’ll film the next night, and the night after that! Yo Joshua, you also said your words weren’t a piece of cultural commentary, but from my end I saw a lot fewer smartphone screens blocking my view as soon as “Nothing Good Ever Happens at the Goddamn Thirsty Crow” came through the speakers. Thank you.

Of course more voices accompanied the band when the beat to “Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings” began to pound into the drumkit. One of FJM’s more popular songs, even the passive aggressive recipient of my aforementioned verbal lashing (the one who raised her hand earlier on) knew some words. FYI, she instagrammed SEVEN videos of the same song. What? WHAT?

My judgmental attitude subsided two songs later, though. The pre-encore show closer, “The Ideal Husband,” was a beautiful rock n’ roll freakshow. The swinging beat paired with such a simple chord progression emanated harshly from the speakers in the best possible way. If I have any sense of pitch, it was played a couple of steps lower than the recording but I can’t blame the guy. Through jumps onto the bass drum, lunges, and emotional drainage, I’d be losing my voice too.

There was nothing disingenuous about what happened on stage last night. And to be in the same room as someone willing to look at a packed venue and essentially call everyone out for being a member of the arguably most distracted generation was an honor.

Spoken word set to a catchy beat, with lyrics that are as haunting as the melody; Ryder Bach’s “New Technology Remix” expresses a love/hate relationship that everyone can relate to. In one minute and fifty-nine seconds, Bach succinctly dictates passive/aggressive angst, with words that are seemingly simple, yet drip with sarcasm. The dichotomy being that the music itself is far more upbeat, leaving one to surmise this is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to a carefully cultivated collaboration.

Long-time friends with Miles Wyoming of New Technology, this remix isn’t out of place and is somewhat romantic. The video, filmed by Bach himself on an iPhone in his New York apartment, is just as eerie and obscure as the song itself. Originally based in Los Angeles, Bach bought a one-way ticket to New York to “find himself,” which really embraces the character of this track.

So you’re in Echo Park cos that’s where you live (yeah, I KNOW where you live) and you’re like oh hey there’s this festival called Culture Collide and oh hey they get all these cool international acts I should check them out and oh sweet this one is called Death by Unga Bunga why the fuck wouldn’t I go see them, right? WRONG. That’s what I did but none of you donks even know how to be alive so let me tell you real quick about what it’s like.

Death by Unga Bunga is a supremely named 5 piece from Norway. One of those countries with great healthcare coverage and super chill prisons on the topside of Europe. They’ve been playing together for 7+ years now, and last night at the EchoPlex they slayed with their mighty mix of garage pop and power punk. With some of their lo-pop stylings they could easily find a home in the LA scene, excepting that the heavenly licks flying from lead guitarist Stian Gulbrandsen and the Jagger-esque shapes pulled by frontman Sebastian Ulstad Olsen, not to mention the stellar musicianship of the rhythm section, would place them in another tier musically. They play songs about important stuff like being best friends and french kissing and melted cheese/love and while they pull influence from lo-pop of the 60s and 70s, they carry their music with a unique modern voice rather than just standing on their predecessors’ shoulders.

Despite playing to an underwhelming number at the EchoPlex last night, they performed at an eleven 100% of the time and left the whole crowd, tiny as it may have been, breathless and wanting just a couple more goes. Lucky for you, you goddamn donks, you goddamn fucking donks who ignored this stellar band who flew all the way from god knows where at the top of Europe just to play this beautiful show for you, well you guessed it you donks that if you missed them, and I know you missed them, you can catch Death by Unga Bunga once more at 8:30pm tonight at Taix Restaurant.

To me, it’s like a skittering mass, never grasped, and applied from a constant stream of thoughts, that flood my psyche, leaving me yearning for friends from far away, or that one time…

Anyway, my musical life has gone far beyond the trivial upheavals of failed relationships and I find myself contorting past any previous points of recognition. I’m losing sight of what I loved about playing music.

Look, I’m fortunate for every single note, for every single fan. But the virtual universe involved in making melody is downright draining. And more than anything, I don’t trust anyone other than Chris anymore. (Of course, I trust Shawn, Tierney, all my friends, all our fans, my neighbors, Mike Campbell, Laura Stevenson and every other musician out there on the planet. I hope the vagueness of my tongue-biting is crystal clear.)

I know you’re proud of me, but I’m still sorry that I didn’t finish school and get business cards affixed with the perfect font, an office with my name etched on the door.

There are further apologies. To musicians, friends and girlfriends, I haven’t always been the best. Sometimes I’ve been the worst. A hubristic pursuit and code of creation above all else has led me here, rethinking all my thoughts, to thinking that perhaps it’s just time to get out of the batter’s box.

As we contemplate new careers, Chris and I are putting out a collection of songs under the name The Lowlifes. It’s an expression of what those border guards (and countless others) are thinking, even if they don’t say it.

I don’t know what’s right or what direction I’m headed in next. I do know that I’m going to take a shot at the distilling world, the bar world and restaurant world.

I know I’m probably not the son that anyone would aim to have. But I definitely tried the best that my brain has to give. Your understanding and support have been everything. Plus, thanks for giving me this consciousness. Even when it all seems lost, at least there is an “it” to be had.
