Dan Sartain has a new album to be released this July. We have been gnawing away at past bones that have been thrown to us in the forms of his previous albums and videos. So to give you a little taste of what is coming this summer we have one of our favorite videos of his.
On July 20, 2010 One Little Indian Records will release Dan Sartain Lives, the latest album from Alabama’s Magic City-based lo-fi rockabilly troubadour Dan Sartain. Lives was produced by Grammy Award winner Liam Watson (The White Stripes, ex-Stranglers Hugh Cornwell) and is the long awaited follow-up to the 2006 full length Join Dan Sartain.
Birmingham, AL-based Dan Sartain rode in on the wave of interest in stripped-down back-to-basics roots music. The lean and bequiffed Sartain self-released a couple of long-players before his full debut; 2003′s Dan Sartain vs. the Serpientes, released on Rocket From The Crypt/Hot Snakes frontman John “Speedo” Reis’ Swami label. The album’s frantic and compelling fusion of rockabilly, blues, garage, and punk, characterized by heartfelt yet gloriously misanthropic songs were championed by journalists at NME, MOJO,Rolling Stone and GQ among many others.

When I was thirteen I had a recurring nightmare where my two older sisters, who were very in-the-know with their alternative punk scene, would drag me along to one of their crazy dance parties that they always bragged about. The partygoers all wore crazy spandex and had the biggest and brightest hair imaginable. This dream of mine has long since stopped happening but I remember it, if not in great detail. My dreams never portrayed the party to be so futuristic as is the Yeasayer video for “O.N.E.”, but there were animals like jackals on leashes and huge birds in cages with no wings or feathers, so maybe they weren’t birds at all. It was more scary than exotic, and I prefer this version that Yeasayer has created over my dream version – at least I don’t wake up feeling nausea. I do feel bad for the main character. At the end of the video you realize there are so many versions of himself just waiting to get out, he must be so confused and the security guards don’t understand him at all so they throw him out of the club in the middle of the day. By why daytime? My only other question is, what is that thing swimming in the tank?
Mass confusion after watching this. And now I would like to quote the greatly underappreciated pop band OMC by saying “how bizarre, how bizarre”. Are Hot Chip the next Back Street Boys? Not even close. Directed by Peter Serafinowicz for their recently released almost, but not quite, pop album titled One Life Stand. Astralwerks fronted the money, go buy the album from them.
Dustin Kensrue, frontman of Thrice, released a solo Christmas Album last year on Vagrant. Above is a video for the final track This Is War.
Dustin, along with Saves The Day’s Chris Conley, Matt Pryor of the Get Up Kids and Bayside’s Anthony Raneri, will be doing a small tour aptly named “Where’s The Band” next month, with each showcasing some of their own solo works. Gonna be a good time!
Where’s The Band Tour Dates:
January 7th – The Troubadour – Los Angeles
January 8th – HOB – San Diego
January 9th – HOB – Anaheim
January 10th – Bottom of the Hill – San Fransisco
This article and video I found on Digg deserves a feature. During the Opie & Anthony show on Sirius Radio a few days ago, they brought in a homeless man to do a promo bit for a “homeless shopping spree.” The man, Daniel Mustard, says he can sing and so they bring him a guitar and the video above is the result. The most moving Radiohead cover I have ever heard. Notice his facial expressions as he sings, the words even hit him hard.

Chromeo is the epitome of everything I love and look for in great music. This video defines and demonstrates why they are pure genius. No worries, most of you so called Indie elitist will never get their greatness. Makes me want to get up and dance while laughing at all the subtle 80s Dance Movie references.
Also, to make things even better, the teamed up with my drink of choice a few months ago to give this track, and an awesome remix, away for free! I think a change in New Year’s plans is appropriate.
