Tunng makes Magnet Magazine a Mixtape

Tunng makes Magnet Magazine a Mixtape

-
The U.K.’s Tunng always seems to be in a constant state of transition, being a band that believes in musical experimentation with a lineup that’s done a bit of changing over the years. In fact, the band’s fourth full-length, …And Then We Saw Land (which came out this month on Thrill Jockey), was made with a new lyricist, lead vocalist and sounds not heard on previous albums. It’s just another chapter in the ever-changing world of Tunng. The band will be hitting the European festival circuit this summer while it promotes the new release on tour. Check out this mix tape that multi-instrumentalist Phil Winter made for MAGNET.

Refused to reunite – website reads “Coming Soon”

Refused to reunite – website reads “Coming Soon”

Fans of Refused (pretty much every person I know) will be thrilled to hear that the band has confirmed festival dates in Europe this summer. If you head over to their official website you will find that they have left a little note for everyone “Coming Soon”. Their last and quite possibly best album The Shape Of Punk To Come was released in 1998 and saw the band reaching cult like status across the world, and not just in the hardcore genre.

All we have to say is, the world is ready for some more Refused. In fact it’s been much too long. Visit Refused.

Punknews.org reports:
UPDATE: An anonymous source close to the situation has confirmed that Refused will indeed be reuniting. Plans right now include live performances at some to-be-confirmed European summer festivals. We’ll keep you updated as details come in.

Look Mexico announces May Tour Dates with Weatherbox

Look Mexico announces May Tour Dates with Weatherbox

-
Austin, TX’s Look Mexico has announced a new run of tour dates in May.  The co-headlining tour with San Diego, CA’s Weatherbox will begin in the band’s new hometown at Emo’s on May 13th and wrap up in San Diego at the Che Cafe on May 22nd.  Look Mexico recently finished a three-week headlining tour that included performances at both this year’s Harvest of Hope and SXSW festivals.

Look Mexico’s sophomore album To Bed To Battle was released March 23rd on Suburban Home and has been earning great reviews, with AbsolutePunk.net writing, “To Bed to Battle isn’t to be passed over lightly. It’s reminiscent of a time where more was put into the build of a song structure…”.  The album also debuted on two Billboard charts this week, reaching #44 on the Alternative New Artist Albums and #129 on the Top New Artist Albums charts.

Additionally, the band’s current single “You Stay. I Go. No Following.” is now confirmed for inclusion on the Rock Band Network. The song, authored for the RBN by Explosive Kitty, will be available on the site by the end of the month; a preview can be seen here.  The MP3 download of “You Stay. I Go. A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT CHARITY FUNDRASING AUCTION
FOR THE HARVEST OF HOPE FOUNDATION!

From the 2010 Harvest of Hope Fest Team, we would like to cordially invite you to participate in our charity fundraising auction for the nonprofit Harvest of Hope Foundation.  Autographed musical instruments have been donated by artists from the 2010 Harvest of Hope Fest to help raise funds for migrant agricultural workers.  Migrant farmworkers harvest our fruits and vegetables in rural areas out of sight of most Americans.  They earn our support due to their continuous hard work and incredible work ethic; all to provide us the energy we need to sustain life. They travel long distances to do fieldwork that most Americans will not do, earn relatively little for their effort, and struggle to find adequate housing and health care services.

As of April 1, 2010 the Harvest of Hope Foundation has distributed over $800,000 for car repairs due to breakdowns, gas, tires, bus tickets, housing, rent, utilities, medical services, food, clothing, funeral expenses and scholarships to children of migrant farmworkers attending college.

By bidding in this auction, you are helping to raise funds and to make your own direct connection to migrant farmworkers and the goods they produce for us to consume

Foals and Sub Pop get back together

Foals and Sub Pop get back together

In April of 2008, we at Sub Pop Records had the good fortune to release the US version of Antidotes, the debut album by Oxford, UK quintet Foals. Antidotes was a special album. In the idiot clamor of retro guitars, its keen sense of dare and future marked Foals out as a band intent on establishing their own context: hurtling along on incessant, acrobatic fret-play and cymbals hissing with the bliss of exertion. It won them attention, and the chance to evolve in a space of their own. Two years on from that impressive introduction, a choice has been made–rather than contort Antidotes’ lithesome guitars into ever more elaborate patterns, Total Life Forever is the sound of a band settling into and surveying the decay of old protocols. With this new album, Foals strip their sound back and turn themselves inside out searching for that invisible human thing.

“I feel like I’m wearing less masks with my lyrics now,” offers 23-year-old frontman and guitarist Yannis Philippakis. “Before I felt secure behind cryptic images–I liked stuff that didn’t show me to myself, but on this record I tried to express things with more truth.”

The result is an album as persuasive emotionally as Antidotes was physically. Whereas that album constantly reinforced its own presence by filling the air with yelping and polyrhythm, tracks on Total Life Forever such as disarming opener “Blue Blood,” “2 Trees” and the astonishing “Black Gold” are happier to leave gaps for the listener to explore in mind’s ear and eye.

Written primarily in the basement of their Oxford HQ (“The House Of Supreme Mathematics”) and recorded in Gothenburg with former Clor man Luke Smith, Total Life Forever finds Foals singing rather than shouting, emotional as well as functional. The band’s soul-search reveals new antidotes found in infinite, internal spaces rather than carved violently upon the air–_Total Life Forever_ feels more the work of artists than artisans. It’s a triumph that they’ve managed to remain a band of progress and propulsion while investigating that vast, dark space lurking inside themselves–that gap between ribs where “nature, or god or whatever you wanna call it, will come in.”

Total Life Forever will be available in the US digitally on May 11th, 2010, and on CD and double-LP June 15, 2010.

Broken Bells announce Tour Dates and lots of news

Broken Bells announce Tour Dates and lots of news

James Mercer and Danger Mouse To Take “Soothing melodies that get stuck in your head for days” (TIME Magazine) On The Road Beginning May 18 in San Diego

Debut Album Moves Nearly 50K First Week, Peaks at #1 on iTunes Album Chart

In the wake of their new band’s self titled Columbia Records debut charting at #7 and selling just shy of 50,000 in its first week (and reaching as high as #1 on iTunes),  James Mercer and Brian Burton a/k/a Danger Mouse have confirmed Broken Bells first ever tour. The dates commence May 18 in San Diego and will include stops in 16 North American cities with support by The Morning Benders

In addition to being the year’s highest charting debut album by an alternative/rock band,  Broken Bells’ has met with an insanely and unanimously positive critical reception:  Rolling Stone has hailed the album as “the year’s coolest left field pop disc” in a 4-star lead review, while Wired described it as “crazy good stuff”  and Entertainment Weekly praised it as a “subtly savory sonic morsel.”

The mere handful of shows the band has played to date have fared likewise, selling out as quickly as tickets could be processed, and dazzling crowds in Los Angeles, New York, and most recently Austin. Witnessing one of these first few performances, US Weekly likened the Broken Bells live experience to “being at a cozy, intimate underground basement party somewhere in Northern California with the best art rock band on the coast providing the soundtrack.”

Broken Bells features Mercer on vocals, guitars and bass while Burton plays organ, drums, piano, synths and bass. The pair play all instruments on the album with the exception of a full string section arranged by Daniele Luppi. Broken Bells was recorded by Todd Monfalcone and Kennie Takahashi at Mondo Studio in Los Angeles and produced by Danger Mouse.

Each a long-time fan of the other’s work, Burton and Mercer first met face-to-face backstage at the 2004 Roskilde Festival in Copenhagen. The pair immediately hit it off and kept in touch over the prevailing half decade and in May 2008 seized the opportunity to finally collaborate on original music together. Broken Bells was pared down from more than 20 pieces of new music written and recorded to the 10 songs that coalesced together the most seamlessly.

Mercer and Burton will continue to work as a band in the future.

VBS.TV Explores The London Pirate Radio Scene

We’ve been fascinated by the London pirate radio scene for a while now. Kids breaking on to rooftops and getting radio geeky by erecting terrestrial radio stations and old school antennas and then using modern technology to spread the word and the music. It’s a story that had to be told, so we did and it’s called London Pirate Frequencies.

Watch London Pirate Frequencies on VBS.TV

After getting a history lesson on sex, drugs and pirate radio, we meet today’s pirate radio heroes, based in the heart of London, who are broadcasting music and the sounds of today’s from secret tower block studios and laptops across the city.

Matt Mason (host and author of Pirate’s Dilemma)

Foreign Born – Early Warnings – MP3 Download

Foreign Born – Early Warnings – MP3 Download

It’s a good thing Foreign Born were prepared for the long haul when they wrote “Early Warnings” because the song has traveled many miles. We first found it traveling from Person To Person on Foreign Born’s new album this summer. Matthew Lessner then took it on a globe-spanning trek to The Uncharted Reaches in his video this Fall. Now Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend and Discovery blasts the song into space straight to the Moon, on his new remix of the song. Foreign Born singer Matt Popieluch’s vocals gently fade in and out as they are broadcast back to us on a rich bed of deep space transmissions. The song comes to an angelic climax as it makes it’s final lunar landing. Earth to Rostam. Mission Accomplished.
