Smith Westerns ‘Dye It Blonde’ Album Review

If the Smith Westerns 2009 debut had any shortcomings they were always explained with one remark: “They recorded it in high school.” The exuberant, garage glam on Smith Westerns was far from the finished project, as most records in that vein seem to be—they certainly had room to grow. Nonetheless their refreshing slant on “garage rock” earned them plaudits and recognition beyond the blogosphere.

Antony & The Johnsons “Swanlights” Best New Album

"Everything Is New" is as eloquent as a Florentine ballad brought forth from loves desire. Indeed it’s making my love for Antony feel just like the first time. This honeymoon stage leads to the flowering arrangements of “The Great White Open”. Those tender, soft, plucking, textures heard from finely recorded acoustics make hearts pander for more, MORE, while Antony’s vocals quiver like a blind man in unadulterated ecstasy and his whole being wraps around lyrics like he owns them (which he probably put a copyright on, so by all means he does own them).

Best New Music – White Mystery

White Mystery is basically Miss Alex White and The Red Orchestra with a shorter name and less band members. Two, to be exact. And to be even more precise, (Miss) Alex White and brother (Mister) Francis. On their self-titled debut the Windy City relatives put up walls of sound that are louder, faster, heavy, fuzzier, and altogether dirtier than anything we've heard from the Red Orchestra.
