18 Questions with Kuan

1. Tell us about the band?

We’re an instrumental quartet from Dayton, OH.  Originally we we’re a guitar/guitar/drum trio, in Nov. 2008 we added a bassist which has rooted us rhythmically and allowed us to move our music in different directions.

2. Have you ever been fed up with playing music or with band members, why?

Nah, we love each other.  But, it is difficult in today’s musical landscape with there being so much emphasis on popular conformity.

3. What was your first concert experience? Do you remember how you felt once the concert was over?

It was great, we had a great response. It was in our hometown so we had a lot of support.

4. Did you grow up wanting to play music, or when did the whole making albums thing come about and how?

We pretty much grew up heavily influenced by music.  We’ve all been involved with it one way or another for most of our lives.  We’ve played together in several groups, playing shows, recording, etc. Kuan happens to be what we’re doing now and it’s not going to stop anytime soon.

5. What qualifies you guys to be in a band?

We take music pretty seriously; it’s one of the main components in each of our lives. Without it I think we’d all feel pretty creatively constipated. No one likes constipation.

6. Do you have a favorite song you have ever written? Why?

Probably whatever new song we happen to be working on. Our music doesn’t have any specific direction, so whatever we are working on is a collaborative expression of what’s going on at that time. That’s what’s really exciting about the whole thing.

7. What is your greatest weakness as a band?

We try to be as democratic as possible in the writing process, we won’t settle on something until we all feel good about it and sometimes that can take quite a long time.  Sometimes we also have a hard time listening to each other and really making it about the whole song as opposed to the part.

8. What qualities should a successful label or manager have?

Well if you ask most labels or managers that question they’ll probably answer back with something monetary, but in our eyes that doesn’t really define success. If we ever get signed, we’d like it to be with a label that is doing it to promote art, not necessarily recycled ideas that bring in a profit.

9. What’s the scariest thing that has ever happened to you in your life?

Capitalism, consumer culture, crop circles, boogers.

10. What’s the first thing you do when the band arrives in a new town while on tour?

Usually we’ll find whatever club we’re playing then walk around and see what’s going on in that neck of the woods.  Tell people we might run into about our show drop some CDs at the local record store, have a picnic.

11. Have you ever had an audience member give you the willies because they kept looking at you all weird?

Yes, usually we end up crashing on their floor.

12. Have you ever cried while listening to music? If so what were you listening too?

Of course not, we’re all men. Our lachrymal glands are drier than a desert. None of us have ever cried-ever. Except for Chip, he tears up every time Alanis Morissette’s “Ironic” hits the speakers.

13. If you could re-record, or re-write any song of yours what would that song be?

It’d be nice to go back and redo a bunch of stuff, but we’d rather just keep on keepin’ on.

14. What’s the worst place you have ever played a show at, and why?

We played a show in New Jersey; no one was there to see the show. Then we got cut-off for open mic.  Dave Matthews style.

15. In a perfect world how many albums would you have to sell to be happy?

Enough to pay for making them, we’re in a lot of debt.

16. What do you guys have planned for the future?

Just to continue developing our music, wherever that may lead us.  We’d like to spend a lot of time on the road getting our music into people’s brains and, world domination of course.

17. What music do you listen to when you are having a bad day?

We’re pretty happy dudes for the most part, our bad days are few and far between. For Chip though it’s definitely Alanis Morissette.

18. If you had your life to live over again, what one thing would you change?

All four of us, hands down… NO CIRCUMCISION!!…What a drag it is to never know our full potential.
