The Black Lips are B-A-N-A-N-E-R-S!!! Anyone who has recently left a show of theirs will definitely agree. They will probably also be covered in sweat, spit, and beer. The band has often been cited for the lunacy of their shows; Beer being spit on the crowd, spit being tossed around from mouth to mouth (via band members kissing or aiming their spit from a few feet away to each others gaping maws.), fisticuffs, and even exposed genitalia. Now this is not a guarantee that you will see all of this at one of their shows, but usually a good combo of the aforementioned.
At this point, dear reader, I am sure that you are all set to make it to the next show…but wait, they play music too. And it is some of the sweetest tunes an ear can hear. One of the grumpier members of the crowd, hiding from the violent mist of less than hygienic bodily fluids, later described the sound as infinitely catchy. “I don’t really want to like it but its so damn toe-tappy” stated Beanbag (name has been changed for legal purposes).
It’s all true, the Black Lips are the Barnum & Baileys of a raunchy, raucous, rock ‘n’ rollin good time!

I saw Sufjan Stevens play at the Highdive, tiny venue in Champaign, on September 26 this year. He’s got a very unusual stage presence. The light reflects off of him beautifully. He’s got a contagious peace. Read the full story

It took eight years, five albums, a couple EPs and a handful of trips around the world \’96\’a0not to mention getting married and having a child \’96\’a0to push Mike Kinsella to finally testing his material with a full-band. Thankfully, for both him and the two sold-out crowds at Chicago\’92s Beat Kitchen, it worked. Maybe not to the degree he had originally hoped, but it worked.

Date: September 11th, 2009It’s weird. Music is just music, right? And musicians are just musicians? But what does that make Bechtolt? His beats are addicting, but they’re stolen. Which is OK, I guess, because he knows his work is bound to leak and be downloaded anyway. I’d feel bad about that fact, but the guy literally insists on giving his stuff away for free. At shows copies of his latest LP, “See Mystery Lights,” are $10, but he’s forcing nobody’s hand when it comes to actually buying one. So why do I feel so drawn into the not-cult that was YACHT’s September 11 show at Chicago’s Empty Bottle? (To reiterate: NOT a cult.)

I’m intrigued by Jona Bechtolt. His Web site consists of anchors and triads and black and white patterning. His songs are catchy. His dance moves infectious. And his history of pirating software has carved him out a number of powerful enemies. He’s not very flashy, though his tight white suspenders indicate otherwise. He’s not very pretentious, either, though some interviews he’s done suggest the opposite. He’s YACHT. Just another Young American Challenging High Technology. Just another intriguing 20something. Most people believe it is best to see an artist play to a hometown crowd. The show Dappled Cities performed to a capacity audience of 1300 people in Sydney on Saturday night was no exception. They mixed new and old material with colorful theatrics and this spectacle of excellent art rock songs presented live was the musical equivalent of having mystical creatures shower you in pixie dust.

While I thoroughly enjoyed the Dead Weather’s first and only album to date Horehound, nothing, and I mean nothing, could have prepared me for the sonic onslaught that took place at The Depot in Salt Lake City on August 18th.

Tonight was a night of firsts\’85 First time dealing with horrible late night traffic in the DC area. First time going to a show at DC9 in the arguably questionable part of the city. First time seeing Blacklist. Unfortunately, due to the traffic, I was a bit late, which caused me to miss the first part of Blacklist\’92s set. The party certainly didn\’92t wait for me though. Although sparse in numbers, the people that were in attendance weren\’92t wasting any time.

A fashion show, a late start, a barrage of new material, those were all things working against The Photo Atlas Saturday night, yet the band\’92s infectious energy never faded. As always vocalist Alan Andrews led the charge, playing to a dwindled audience (we\’92ll address this momentarily) at the Marquis Theater in Denver, with his stellar dancing and constant cries of \’93are we having fun tonight.\’94 And most of us were, yet it was obvious the audience had diminished, courtesy of the benefit fashion show, To Write Love on Her Arms. Benefit to whom? We\’92re not sure, but it certainly didn\’92t benefit The Photo Atlas. Shortly after doing their microphone check and getting the audience riled up and ready to dance and sing along to the contagious beats of one of Denver\’92s finest, the band abandoned the stage to give way to Denver\’92s not-so-finest fashion models (and this from a guy who wears plaid on plaid).

“It\’92s true. The Weakerthans\’92 concert reduced this stonehearted music critic to a state of slovenly fandom reminiscent of a teenage girl at a Jonas Brothers\’92 concert.”
